During the closing ceremony of the Indian Himalayan Region Climate Change Conclave in Imphal, the Governor emphasized that the newly released State Action Plan on Climate Change needs to result in real, tangible outcomes. This plan includes assessments at the district level and aligns with national climate initiatives.
Governor Bhalla highlighted several important projects, such as the Model Carbon-Positive Eco-Village in Phayeng and the Integrated Ecosystem Services Project in Andro. These initiatives aim to strengthen conservation efforts in key areas, including Loktak Lake, one of the largest wetlands in India.
Another noteworthy initiative is the Spring Rejuvenation Programme, which has mapped over 490 natural springs in Ukhrul, Kamjong, and Senapati. This program aims to improve water security and help communities adapt to changing climatic conditions.
The Governor believes that combining policy, scientific research, and community engagement is essential for building resilience against climate change. This commitment is a key part of Manipur’s development strategy.
The two-day conclave gathered around 400 participants from 12 Himalayan states, including government representatives, researchers, and civil society organizations. It provided a valuable platform for discussing climate challenges and solutions in the region.
During the event, the Governor visited various exhibitions and applauded the innovative, community-driven initiatives displayed. He also launched five important publications, including updates on the State Action Plan and details about wetlands and springs in Manipur. Additionally, he inaugurated the State Environment and Climate Data Centre online.
