The Psyche spacecraft, launched in October 2023, is on a remarkable journey to a metal-rich asteroid, also named Psyche. This mission aims to unravel the origins of Earth, but it’s hit a snag with its propulsion system. NASA engineers are currently looking into a drop in fuel pressure that led to the thrusters being turned off.

The pressure in the propulsion system decreased from 36 pounds per square inch (psi) to around 26 psi. This was detected on April 1, prompting the spacecraft to automatically shut down its thrusters to ensure safety. NASA is working to resolve this issue before mid-June, which is crucial for maintaining the mission’s trajectory. They may switch to a backup fuel line to get the thrusters firing again.

Psyche is over 2.2 billion miles from Earth and is scheduled to enter the asteroid’s orbit by late July 2029, beginning its scientific exploration in August. Before reaching Psyche, it will fly by Mars in spring 2026, using the planet’s gravitational pull to help propel its journey. The asteroid is unique; it’s believed to be the core of a shattered planetesimal, providing insights into how planets form.

This mission has faced several challenges. It was initially set to launch in 2022 but was delayed due to software issues. Just a week before the rescheduled launch, engineers discovered a potential overheating threat in the thrusters, pushing the launch back by another week. However, NASA remains optimistic. Louise Prockter, head of planetary science, noted that such complications are common, highlighting the mission’s built-in redundancies. “We’re keeping tabs on it, but we don’t have any concerns at the moment,” she stated.

Interestingly, missions like Psyche reflect a growing interest in asteroids as not just space rocks, but as valuable resources. According to a recent report by the Planetary Resources Agency, asteroids could hold metals worth trillions of dollars.
