An FBI spokesperson shared with Fox News that a pair of gloves found in the Nancy Guthrie investigation holds DNA from an unknown male. This pair stands out because it resembles the gloves seen on a subject in nearby surveillance footage.
Around 16 gloves were collected during the search for evidence near Guthrie’s home. Most of these were regular searchers’ gloves discarded during the investigation. However, the one with DNA appears to be different.
Experts point out that the gloves seen in the doorbell footage look like nitrile gloves worn over another layer. This style is often used to minimize fingerprints and maintain hygiene.
The gloves discovered about two miles from Guthrie’s home were sent to a private lab in Florida for testing. They arrived on Friday, and the FBI received preliminary results the following Saturday. They are now waiting for verification before entering the DNA profile into CODIS, the national DNA database. This verification process typically takes around 24 hours.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos emphasized that results from the lab could take between one to ten days, depending on the urgency assigned to each piece of evidence. For example, the glove found closer to Guthrie’s home is prioritized over those found farther away. Nanos didn’t specify which items are most urgent but noted that detectives are focusing on key pieces of evidence.
This case highlights how forensic science is continually evolving. According to a report from the National Institute of Justice, advancements in DNA technology have significantly increased the chances of solving cases.
