Unraveling the Mystery: The Tragic Story Behind Gene Hackman’s Dog in a Crate Following Zinna’s Death

The passing of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, has left many fans in shock. Close to their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, animal lovers are also heartbroken over the death of their cherished dog, Zinna. The 12-year-old dog was discovered dead in her crate, just a short distance from Betsy’s body.

Betsy was found in the bathroom, near scattered thyroid medication, while Hackman’s body was located in another room. Officials revealed that Hackman, 95, died from cardiovascular disease, worsened by advanced Alzheimer’s. He likely passed away alone, around February 18, with his pacemaker showing no activity since then.

Betsy, 65, might have died about a week earlier, likely from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a serious illness caused by exposure to rodent droppings. Surveillance footage showed her active on February 11, running errands before her communication suddenly stopped.

Hantavirus can start with flu-like symptoms and worsen rapidly, sometimes leading to severe breathing issues and death within days if untreated. The exact timeline of Betsy’s illness remains unclear, but experts say symptoms can develop quickly and may be fatal without medical help.

Zinna’s death has not been explained, and a necropsy is pending. A few days before her death, Betsy had taken Zinna to the vet for an unknown procedure, which may explain why the dog was in a crate. When the couple was discovered, Zinna’s crate door was closed. This raises concerns about whether she was trapped without food or water. Typically, dogs can survive only a few days without these essentials.

Alongside Zinna, their other two dogs, Bear and Nikita, were found healthy on the property, though hungry. It seems they had access to the outdoors, while Zinna may not have had the same opportunity. The crate’s closed door suggests she may have remained confined for an extended period.

Veterinarians stress that dogs need regular access to food and water, and it’s generally advised not to leave them in crates for long periods. Crate training can be beneficial for dogs, but it should never lead to neglect. The couple were known to be devoted pet parents who prioritized their dogs’ well-being.

Animal advocates in the community described Hackman as a softy for his dogs. They were known for their kindness, and their bond with Zinna was particularly strong. It’s believed that Betsy would have ensured Zinna was cared for and would not have deliberately left her in the crate.

The community remembers Hackman and Arakawa fondly, recalling how they walked their dogs around the neighborhood. This tragic incident has left many confused and saddened, as Zinna was a beloved companion who enriched their lives.

The investigation continues, and updates will provide more clarity regarding the circumstances leading to their deaths and Zinna’s passing. In the meantime, the story serves as a reminder of the bonds between humans and their pets, and the importance of caring for them responsibly.
