On the other hand, Jonathan Losos, a biology professor, points out that just because an animal comes from a dry place doesn’t mean it fears water. Some wild cats even swim to cool off or hide from predators. He argues that the story is more complex.

Jennifer Vonk, an animal cognition expert, highlights the physical discomfort of being wet. Waterlogged fur can make movement tricky, leaving cats feeling vulnerable. Cats also rely heavily on their sense of smell, and water can mask their natural scents, adding to their discomfort.

It seems that cats’ dislike of water may stem from a combination of factors. Vitale adds that early experiences can shape a cat’s perceptions. If kittens are exposed to water during their development, they may grow up more comfortable around it. This concept is known as socialization, which enhances a kitten’s confidence in various situations.

Ultimately, while many cats shy away from water, individual personalities play a huge role. Some might embrace it despite little exposure, while others could remain wary, regardless of their experiences.
