Unruly Celebrations on University Avenue: Gators’ Victory Leads to Three Arrests and One Injury

At around 12:42 a.m., a student named Gavin McArdle, just 20 years old, caught the attention of officers when he tried to hide a suspicious item under his shirt. When an officer approached him, he panicked and attempted to flee through the crowd. Despite the officer’s efforts to catch him, McArdle broke away, causing the officer to fall in the process. After a chase, he was finally arrested at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, where he was identified but chose not to provide a statement. The item he had concealed was lost in the jubilant crowd.

Another arrest involved 23-year-old Nicholas Gallie. He climbed onto the hood of a police car to drink a beer, which wasn’t taken lightly by the officers. When they told him to step down, he complied but then tried to run away. The encounter escalated, resulting in a struggle as Gallie resisted efforts to detain him. He later claimed confusion about the situation and insisted he had no intention of assaulting the officer.

A third arrest was made of 24-year-old Alexander Myrin, who hindered an officer attending to a medical emergency. His refusal to move from the area made it difficult for the officer to provide necessary assistance.

Amid the celebrations, a dangerous stunt occurred when 28-year-old Steven Buchanan climbed a traffic pole. While on the arm of the pole, he bounced around, thrilling the crowd until he fell hard onto the pavement below. Emergency services responded, and he was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital for treatment.

In recent years, we’ve seen a trend in college sports celebrations turning into chaotic scenes. According to a 2022 survey by the National College Health Assessment, around 30% of college students report engaging in risky behaviors during celebrations, often fueled by alcohol.
