Unstoppable Defense: Analyzing the Latest Draft Aftermath and Building Strategies

The Arizona Cardinals have seen some significant changes this off-season, especially in their defense. They welcomed rookie Cody Simon and free agents Akeem Davis-Gaither and Mykal Walker. These players will join veterans Mack Wilson Sr. and Owen Pappoe in what looks like a revamped inside linebacker group.

Cody Simon stands out as a potential replacement for Kyzir White, known for his leadership at Ohio State. As the assistant GM Dave Sears pointed out, Simon is capable of running the show on defense, showcasing his skills in college.

When it comes to the wide receiver position, the Cardinals didn’t have to make big additions through the draft. Instead, a strong second-year performance from Marvin Harrison Jr. is what the team really needs. If he steps up, it could positively influence the entire receiving squad.

The competition for spots on the defensive line has intensified with the selection of Walter Nolen III. The Cardinals also drafted cornerbacks Johnson and Denzel Burke, boosting their defensive capabilities. Burke, who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 195 pounds, could even transition to safety. His versatility will be a valuable asset, especially in special teams.

Fans had high hopes for Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo, but the timing didn’t align. Skattebo was picked by the Giants before it was the Cardinals’ turn, leaving them to focus on their existing running back talent.

Burke’s performance at Ohio State was stellar. During the playoffs, he only allowed four receptions for 43 yards across 116 snaps. This kind of performance reinforces the expectations around him.

Additionally, Nevada’s Kitan Crawford brings a connection to NFL star Patrick Mahomes, as his cousin. Crawford’s experience as a special teamer has garnered positive feedback from multiple special teams coaches in the league.

Commenting on the Cardinals’ first-round pick, former safety Adrian Wilson compared Nolen III to Darnell Dockett, a praise echoed by Dockett himself. He recalled feeling uplifted by the pick, drawing parallels to when the Cardinals drafted Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu.

While the Cardinals won’t achieve a perfect draft, they hope these selections contribute significantly to their upcoming season. As they build their roster, it will be interesting to see how each player’s strengths are utilized.
