UNT Tennis Battles Hard: Split Matches with La Tech and Weatherford – Highlights & Analysis

The UNT tennis team had a mixed day in Denton, Texas. They faced LA Tech first, where they narrowly lost 4-3. But they quickly bounced back, sweeping Weatherford College 4-0.

With this performance, UNT’s record improved to 4-4, while LA Tech moved to 5-2 and Weatherford sits at 1-2.

Head coach Amanda Stone reflected on the challenges. “It was a tough loss against LA Tech, but we played hard,” she said. “I’m proud of our doubles teams. They really showed maturity, moving past the loss to dominate in the next match. It’s all about growth, and each match teaches us something valuable.”

Freshman Pia Petelensik stood out in both matches. She clinched the victory against Weatherford and won her singles matches in straight sets. She partnered with Carolina Laydner for a commanding 6-0 win in doubles against the Coyotes.

Another freshman, Lou Chalard, also excelled, winning her singles match against LA Tech 6-1, 6-2. She teamed up with Lilly Schultz to take down a tough duo and secure an important doubles win.

In the match against LA Tech, UNT grabbed the doubles point early, thanks to wins from Chalard and Schultz, as well as Laydner and Marina Adati. But LA Tech fought back in singles play, capturing critical wins at lines one, three, and six to clinch their victory.

In the second match, the Mean Green again won the doubles point, with Petelensik and Laydner putting on a dominant display. The freshmen continued to shine, with Petelensik, Giulianna Ciangherotti, and Ujin Batsukh all winning their singles matches convincingly.

This was the team’s second sweep of the season, following a previous 7-0 win against UIW. The players are building momentum as they prepare for their next challenge against UT Arlington.

As they look ahead, experts in sports psychology emphasize the importance of resilience in young athletes. Facing setbacks, like the one against LA Tech, can teach valuable lessons. The ability to move on quickly is crucial for long-term growth and success.

Overall, the UNT tennis team aims to keep improving. Each match is an opportunity to learn and grow stronger together.
