Last November, reports emerged that a crime ring was specifically targeting new iPhone deliveries, using sophisticated methods to track packages. Fast forward to now, and arrests have been made, shedding light on this disturbing trend.
According to Esther Fung from The Wall Street Journal, federal authorities detained 13 individuals linked to a coordinated theft operation that focused on FedEx deliveries nationwide. The criminals used specialized software to scrape tracking numbers and bribed employees at AT&T to gain access to sensitive order details.
An AT&T employee shared customer shipment information, including names and delivery addresses, with the thieves. This insider received bonuses for recruiting others into the scheme.
The operation was highly organized. Thieves, referred to as “runners,” were dispatched with tracking information to snatch packages as soon as they arrived. Thousands of iPhones were pilfered, alongside other products like Apple Watches and Samsung phones.
A key player in this ring was Demetrio Reyes Martinez, known online as “CookieNerd.” This individual created the software that bypassed FedEx’s delivery data limits and sold it online. Currently residing in the Dominican Republic, Martinez remains at large.
These thefts highlight a growing concern about package security. According to a 2023 survey by the security firm *SimpliSafe*, over 43% of Americans reported experiencing package theft. This uptick in “porch piracy” stresses the need for preventative measures, like requiring signatures for delivery.
