Unveiling 237 Major Railway Projects Sanctioned in Under 4 Years: A Rs 1,90,333 Crore Investment Led by Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi: Recently, the Indian Railways has announced a significant expansion. They’ve approved 237 projects, which include 40 new lines, 17 gauge conversions, and 180 doubling projects. This massive undertaking covers a total length of 9,703 kilometers and comes with a hefty price tag of around ₹1.90 lakh crore.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared these updates with the Lok Sabha, noting that in the past four fiscal years, they sanctioned 892 surveys. These surveys also include 267 new lines and focus on enhancing the overall railway network.

To give you some perspective, from 2009 to 2014, Indian Railways commissioned 7,599 kilometers of tracks, averaging about 4.2 kilometers each day. In contrast, from 2014 to 2025, they sanctioned a whopping 34,428 kilometers, which is about 8.57 kilometers per day. This shows a clear shift toward faster growth.

An important factor in this development is the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. This approach has improved project planning and coordination among stakeholders. Better preparation has also led to lower costs.

In a bid to modernize, the Indian Railways launched the Amrit Bharat Station scheme. This project aims to transform railway stations into world-class facilities. So far, they’ve begun redevelopment work on 1,337 stations.

Passenger comfort is also at the forefront. Modern trains, like the Vande Bharat and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, have been introduced. These trains come equipped with state-of-the-art features to improve the travel experience.

Safety is another critical focus. The Kavach system, a National Automatic Train Protection system, is being implemented swiftly across the rail network. Additionally, all unmanned level crossings on broad gauge have been eliminated, and there are plans to phase out manned crossings as well by constructing Road Over Bridges (RoBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs).

These advancements reflect a broader trend in transportation modernization across India, contributing to efficiency, safety, and better passenger experience. As we compare these initiatives to previous years, it’s clear that the future of Indian Railways looks promising.
