In 2015, a man named David Hole was gold prospecting in Maryborough, Victoria. He found a heavy rock that he believed was a nugget and spent years trying to open it, sure of its golden treasure. However, in 2018, he learned it held a much greater secret: it was a 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite.

Initially, the unusual rock had puzzled him. After years of curiosity, he decided to take it to Museums Victoria for expert analysis. Researchers confirmed that Hole’s prized possession was indeed a rare meteorite, not gold. Dermot Henry, a geologist from the Melbourne Museum, noted that its “dimpled, sculpted look” hinted at a fiery journey through Earth’s atmosphere.

What’s fascinating about this meteorite is what it can tell us. After slicing off a small piece, scientists identified it as an H5 ordinary chondrite. According to recent studies, chondrites are among the oldest types of meteorites, mostly composed of iron and key to understanding the early Solar System. Inside, researchers uncovered tiny chondrules—crystallized droplets of metal that provide clues about stellar formation.

This meteorite is special for another reason: rarity. Victoria has only recorded 17 meteorites to date, and Hole’s find is the second-largest chondrite in the state, following a 2003 discovery weighing 55 kilograms. Henry emphasized how rare it is to find such a meteorite among the thousands of gold nuggets unearthed in the area.

Moreover, this meteorite remained unnoticed for many years, potentially landing between 100 and 1,000 years ago. Interestingly, meteor sightings in the region from 1889 to 1951 might relate to its arrival.
