Unveiling Cannes 2026: Park Chan-Wook Leads an Exciting Competition Jury!

The 79th Cannes Film Festival is just around the corner, and it promises an exciting lineup. Notable figures in the industry, including actors Demi Moore, Stellan Skarsgård, Ruth Negga, and Isaach De Bankolé, are set to join an impressive jury. They will review 22 films in the main competition along with jury president Park Chan-Wook, a celebrated director himself.

This year’s competition will showcase films from distinguished directors like Pedro Almodóvar, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Asghar Farhadi, and James Gray. In total, the competition slate features talents from across the globe, but notably, it lacks a strong presence from U.S. filmmakers this time.

The festival kicks off on May 12 with “The Electric Kiss” by Pierre Salvadori as an out-of-competition feature. Moore returns to Cannes after her successful role in “The Substance,” which was a highlight of the last festival and even received an Oscar nomination. Skarsgård also joins the mix after his performance in last year’s acclaimed “Sentimental Value,” which won recognition and nominations on multiple fronts.

Chloé Zhao, who won Oscars for “Nomadland,” is back with “Hamnet,” another anticipated film. Ruth Negga made waves in 2016 with “Loving,” an Oscar-nominated feature, while Isaach De Bankolé is a fixture at Cannes, starring in significant works by Claire Denis and Jim Jarmusch.

Laura Wandel has previously directed three films featured at Cannes, including her Oscar-shortlisted “Playground.” Diego Céspedes won the Un Certain Regard Prize for “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo” last year, affirming his rising status in cinema.

Paul Laverty is known for his long-standing collaboration with Ken Loach. Together, they created influential films that have won Cannes’ top prizes. His work has significantly shaped the film landscape at Cannes over the years.

This year’s festival will not only showcase diverse storytelling but also reflects the evolving dynamics of the film industry. With fewer American films being represented, it raises questions about the shifting landscape of global cinema.
