Helicopters flew overhead, creating the numbers 8 and 0, celebrating the 80th anniversary of World War II’s end. But this parade was not just for show; it showcased China’s latest military advancements.

China’s nuclear arsenal is growing. The U.S. Department of Defense reports that Beijing may have over 600 warheads currently and could exceed 1,000 by 2030. The parade highlighted key missile systems, including the DF-61 intercontinental ballistic missile, capable of being launched from mobile platforms. Its range exceeds 12,000 kilometers, while the updated DF-5C variant boasts a staggering 20,000-kilometer reach.

Meia Nouwens, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, pointed out that presenting the trio of strategic nuclear forces together sends a strong message to the U.S. and its allies. The goal? To deter any potential conflict.

Missile Advancements

Beyond nuclear capabilities, the parade revealed an array of new missiles. These include various anti-ship missiles designed to target U.S. naval forces, particularly in the context of Taiwan, which China claims as its own. In case of conflict over Taiwan, these missiles could play a crucial role in keeping away U.S. aircraft carriers.

The YJ-15, YJ-17, YJ-19, and YJ-20 missiles were among the new prototypes revealed. Capable of hypersonic speeds, these weapons are increasingly difficult to intercept and send a clear signal to the U.S. Navy about potential risks in the region.

The parade also showcased several new drone technologies. Seven types of reconnaissance and attack drones were part of the display, indicating a shift towards autonomous warfare capabilities. Notably, the AJX002 submarine drone was introduced, described as a game-changing weapon for covert naval operations.

Military analyst Mick Ryan commented on this leap in technology, emphasizing that China’s self-reliance signals a new phase of military capability. However, he cautioned that simply having new equipment does not guarantee effectiveness, pointing out that most Western military tech has undergone extensive real-world testing in various conflicts, unlike China’s newer systems.
