Before the Marvel movie Eternals was released, it faced many hurdles. The movie came out after Avengers: Endgame, a major success, leaving fans eager for something equally impactful. But Eternals, featuring lesser-known characters, struggled to connect with the MCU’s ongoing storylines. The pandemic further complicated its release, resulting in lower theater attendance.
Once fans got to see it, a big question emerged: “Where were the Eternals during crises like Thanos’ attack?” This inquiry resonated throughout the fan community, showcasing a significant plot hole.
Fast forward to the new MCU film, Fantastic Four: First Steps. While it appears less weighty than Eternals, it raises a similar concern about character presence. Fans are curious about Doctor Doom’s role, especially as we head into Avengers: Doomsday.
The film hints at Doom with an empty UN seat marked “Latveria,” but ultimately, he doesn’t show up. Matt Shakman, the director, previously confirmed that Doom wouldn’t be in this movie. However, fans were still hoping for a tease or cameo.
In the Marvel Comics universe, Victor von Doom is a brilliant scientist who actively seeks to outsmart his foes. His absence during global threats like Galactus raises eyebrows. Is he busy, uninterested, or perhaps doesn’t exist in this version of the universe?
There are countless theories about why Doom wasn’t present during these events. Maybe he was out of commission or focused on a personal quest. The MCU’s multiverse concept means various versions of characters can exist, adding complexity to their stories.
Marvel needs to address Doctor Doom’s absence eventually. The Eternals director previously noted that their inaction was due to orders to avoid human conflicts unless they involved Deviants. But fans challenge this reasoning, arguing that Thanos’ endeavor was far from a simple human matter.
Ultimately, fans crave storyline continuity that makes sense. As the narrative around Doctor Doom unfolds, both his character and his motives will need to be clearly defined.
