Unveiling History: India’s INSV Kaudinya – A Stunning Rebirth of a 5th-Century Maritime Marvel at Karwar Naval Base

Karwar: The Indian Navy has just launched INSV Kaudinya, a remarkable wooden sailing ship inspired by vessels from the 5th century. This event took place at the INS Kadamba Naval Base in Karwar. INSV Kaudinya draws its design from ancient trade ships used over 1,500 years ago, notably inspired by the Ajanta Caves. The ship is made without any metal, utilizing local resources like coconut coir and wooden planks, crafted through age-old joinery techniques.

A talented team of traditional shipwrights from Kerala, led by master builder Babu Shankar, worked on this project at Goa Shipyard. It was created under a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, the Indian Navy, and Goa Boat Innovations. According to Shankar, “We used locally sourced wood and coir ropes, sticking to traditional marine sewing methods. The rudder and steering follow ancient designs. This ship is truly unique.”

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, oversaw the launch. He described the ship as a powerful connection to India’s glorious maritime past. “With this vessel, India is not just reviving old technology; we’re reconnecting with rich cultural roots,” he said. Shekhawat also noted how India’s legacy of knowledge and innovation has drawn global interest for centuries.

Despite facing centuries of invasions, India’s traditions have remained resilient, inspiring modern generations. Shekhawat tied this resilience to national security, referencing recent military responses to threats, indicating that India’s strength is now recognized globally.

This new ship is set for an exciting journey from Gujarat to Oman, retracing ancient trade routes that once connected India to West Asia. This voyage aims to showcase India’s seafaring skills and spread awareness of its historical maritime influence.
