Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish, Mike Mills from R.E.M., and Steve Gorman of the Black Crowes have teamed up to create a new supergroup called Howl Owl Howl. They’ve been working on their album for five years, but they decided to hit the road for a tour anyway. R.E.M.’s Mills shares, “We don’t care. We’re doing this because we like it, not for money or to revive our careers.”
Their journey began with a simple text. Gorman was organizing a school fundraiser when an artist dropped out last minute. Rucker jumped in to help, and once they performed together, the chemistry inspired them to collaborate more. Mills notes, “It was a fun gig, and we just kept talking.”
The band name sparkled with creativity, thanks to Michael Stipe of R.E.M. Initially, Mills and Gorman weren’t fond of “Howl Owl Howl,” but it grew on them quickly. Gorman recalls how it got stuck in his head, saying, “I couldn’t get rid of it.”
Their first single, “My Cologne,” even draws inspiration from pop star Ariana Grande. Mills hopes she’ll appreciate the humor in it, saying, “It’s meant to be funny. It’s tongue in cheek.”
As for R.E.M.’s future, Mills clarifies that there won’t be a reunion, as they ended things on a strong note. They played together at the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which Mills considers a special occasion, not a comeback.
Rucker has other projects on his plate, too. While he’s working on a country album, he admits his heart is with Howl Owl Howl right now. “It’s simply more satisfying,” he explains.
Mills gave up on making a solo record because he prefers collaborating. “I enjoy working with friends more than being alone in a studio,” he says.
Their intention to tour after the album release is clear. “We’re pretty sure we’ll be doing this again,” Rucker affirms.
This dynamic trio showcases not just their musical skills but also their friendship and collective creativity. It’s refreshing to see artists embracing the joy of music rather than following the old rules of the industry.
