Unveiling ICGS Achal: A Powerful New Addition to the Indian Coast Guard Fleet in Goa

On May 9, 2026, a notable event took place as the Indian Coast Guard welcomed its newest ship, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Achal, at Goa Shipyard Limited. This vessel is part of the new Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessel series. Shri A. Anbarasu, the Additional Secretary and DG (Acquisition) of the Ministry of Defense, officiated the commissioning.

The name “Achal” means “firm,” reflecting the Coast Guard’s steadfast commitment to maritime safety. The ship symbolizes the dedication to protect lives at sea and secure India’s maritime borders.

Achal stands out as a significant achievement in India’s growing defense capabilities. Built with more than 50% indigenous components, it highlights the country’s push for self-reliance in defense through initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

With a length of 51 meters, Achal is designed for efficiency, endurance, and quick response. It boasts two powerful 3000 kW diesel engines, allowing it to reach speeds up to 27 knots and operate for 1500 nautical miles. This long-range capability is crucial for extended missions.

Equipped with advanced technologies, Achal features a 30 mm CRN-91 gun and two stabilized remote-controlled guns. These provide the ship with robust firepower and precise targeting ability. The integrated systems within the vessel enhance its reliability and operational efficiency.

Stationed in Vadinar, Gujarat, Achal will undertake various missions. It will focus on surveillance, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling activities, and pollution response, further solidifying the Coast Guard’s role in safeguarding India’s eastern maritime region.

Commandant (JG) Naveen Kumar leads a skilled team of five officers and 34 personnel. They are trained to manage the advanced systems on board, ensuring readiness for various maritime situations. The addition of Achal strengthens the Coast Guard’s fleet and enhances coastal security, which is vital for protecting India’s maritime interests.

The commissioning of ICGS Achal is not just a technological upgrade but also a testament to India’s commitment to innovation in defense. As the Coast Guard continues to evolve, Achal exemplifies the country’s efforts to expand its capabilities and maintain safety at sea.
