Unveiling Innovation: Samsung’s First Multi-Folding Phone Sets the Stage Amidst Rising Chinese Brand Rivalry

Samsung has just unveiled its first multi-folding smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, aiming to stay ahead of the competition. This exciting device will hit the shelves in South Korea on December 12, with plans to launch in other markets, including China and the U.S., in 2026. Priced at about $2,449, it comes with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The design features two inward-folding hinges that open into a 10-inch display, slightly smaller than an iPad’s. When folded, it’s about 12.9 mm thick, making it bulkier than some of its peers. Liz Lee, an expert at Counterpoint Research, emphasizes that while initial production will be limited, Samsung aims to test the device’s durability and software performance before ramping up production. This device also allows users to run three apps simultaneously, enhancing productivity.

Samsung is stepping up its game as competitors like Apple and Huawei enter the foldable market. In fact, Huawei has recently announced its own trifold phone designed for the Chinese audience, showing that the race for folding tech is heating up. The foldable smartphone market has been relatively small, but it’s growing. In 2023, sales of foldable smartphones increased by 70%, according to industry reports.

Interestingly, Samsung was a pioneer in this space, releasing its first foldable device back in 2019. The growing number of players, especially from China, is pushing innovation and price competition. Brands like Honor have emerged, aiming to capture global interest after spinning off from Huawei.

In the face of these challenges, Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold may serve as a crucial test for its technology leadership. As TM Roh, the co-CEO of Samsung Electronics, noted, this device combines portability, performance, and productivity—all key aspects for today’s mobile users.

As we look ahead, it’ll be fascinating to see how this technology evolves and what consumer demand emerges. The foldable phone landscape is dynamic, and the next few years will be pivotal for both Samsung and its competitors.
