Doug, played by Johnny Pemberton, is a man who struggles with relationships. He’s great with fish but terrible with women. After losing his job at a bar due to his awkwardness, his life spirals. His addiction to percocet and growing debts create further chaos. Doug is not exactly winning any “Father of the Year” awards—his relationships are strained, especially with his ex and daughter.

One fateful day, while out on his boat with dark intentions, Doug spots something floating in the water. It’s a mermaid, whom he names Destiny. Despite her severe injuries and strange appearance, Doug becomes fascinated with her. He sees her as his chance for connection in a life filled with despair.

Pemberton brings a unique charm to Doug, making him relatable even amid his misguided actions. Although Doug keeps the mermaid hidden, he believes he’s being kind. In contrast, Avery Potemni’s portrayal of Destiny adds depth. She oscillates between vulnerability and strength, revealing layers that go beyond their unusual relationship.
