Young users are posting clips highlighting rapid weight loss and showing off fridges stocked with the product. Many captions tease: “Take Molecule and forget about food!” Promising results entice teens, leading them to share their “weight-loss journeys” online.
However, the reality is grim. Maria, 22, bought the pills online. After just two weeks of taking two pills a day, she experienced severe side effects. Her mouth was dry, and she lost her appetite entirely. “I didn’t even want to drink,” Maria explains. The pills also triggered anxiety and dark thoughts, leaving her shocked by their impact.
Other TikTok users reported similar experiences. Symptoms ranged from dilated pupils and tremors to hallucinations. Reports of hospitalizations among children and teens are alarming; a schoolgirl in Siberia ended up in the hospital after an overdose, and a boy in St Petersburg suffered panic attacks after taking the pills.
Digging deeper, the pills often advertise “natural ingredients” like dandelion root. Yet, testing revealed they contained sibutramine—a potent appetite suppressant. Initially approved in the 1980s for weight loss, sibutramine was banned in many countries, including the US, due to its link to increased heart attack risks. In Russia, it’s available only to adults under strict regulations. Yet, unlicensed sales flourish online, with the pills costing about £6-7 for a 20-day supply, significantly cheaper than legal weight-loss alternatives.
Dr. Ksenia Solovieva, an endocrinologist in St. Petersburg, warns against the uncontrolled use of such substances. “Self-administration is very unsafe,” she cautions. The dangers are further magnified for young individuals, particularly those with a history of eating disorders.
Despite ongoing efforts by authorities to remove Molecule from online marketplaces, sellers often evade restrictions by using aliases. TikTok has become a hotbed for promoting these pills, with listings sometimes disguised as everyday items like biscuits or muesli.
Even with the risks, the allure of quick weight loss continues to draw young people in. Maria now advocates against using these pills. She’s shared her experience on forums, urging others to be cautious. Yet, every day, new videos glorifying Molecule pop up, reminding her of the dangerous path she once took.
