CV Raman’s journey from a small village to winning the Nobel Prize and Bharat Ratna is remarkable. His research on light scattering, X-rays, and the colors of the sea significantly advanced India’s reputation in science and technology. To honor his contributions, National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 each year.
So, why February 28? This date marks the day in 1928 when CV Raman announced his groundbreaking discovery of the Raman Effect. His work earned him the Nobel Prize in 1930, making this date especially significant.
The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed to celebrate National Science Day on February 28. The first celebration took place in 1987, and it has since become an annual observance.
This year’s theme is ‘Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for Viksit Bharat’. Events will be held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi to inspire young people to engage with science and recognize its importance in society.
National Science Day aims to ignite curiosity and encourage future generations to explore scientific fields. By raising awareness about science, we can foster a culture of innovation and progress in our country.
