On November 28, 2025, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai delivered the Taragiri, the fourth ship of the Nilgiri-class frigate (Project 17A), to the Indian Navy. This marks a significant step towards India’s goal of self-reliance in building advanced warships.
Taragiri is not just a new vessel; it continues the legacy of its namesake, the earlier INS Taragiri, which served from 1980 to 2013. The new frigate represents a leap forward in stealth, automation, and firepower, embodying India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defense manufacturing.
These modern frigates are designed to meet current maritime threats. The Nilgiri-class features a low radar cross-section, making them difficult for enemies to detect. They also boast enhanced space for advanced weaponry, setting them apart from earlier classes.
Taragiri is equipped with a variety of advanced systems:
- The BrahMos missile system for striking enemy vessels.
- MF-STAR radar for tracking aerial and surface targets.
- MRSAM missiles for defense against incoming threats.
- A 76 mm gun for effective surface engagements.
- Close-in weapon systems for last-minute defense.
- Capabilities for anti-submarine warfare.
This combination makes Taragiri a versatile platform for multiple missions, aligning perfectly with evolving maritime security needs.
Notably, the construction process has improved significantly. The Taragiri was completed in 81 months, a reduction from the 93 months taken for the first vessel, the INS Nilgiri. Around 75% of its components come from Indian sources, which further supports local industries. This project involves over 200 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), creating around 4,000 direct jobs.
Strategically, Taragiri enhances India’s maritime security, providing a strong deterrent in an increasingly competitive Indian Ocean Region. As part of future naval task forces, it will play a crucial role in air and surface defense operations.
Looking ahead, seven ships are planned in the P-17A program. Once completed, they will modernize the Indian Navy’s fleet, replacing older vessels with these high-tech frigates. The lessons learned from this project will likely benefit future shipbuilding initiatives, like the forthcoming Project 17B series.
