Ryan Gosling brought laughter to Comic-Con 2025 during the talk about Project Hail Mary. He shared the stage with author Andy Weir, screenwriter Drew Goddard, and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, all guided by host Joshua Horowitz.
When discussing the film’s scientific accuracy, Lord and Miller talked about the exact velocities they used. They humorously noted that Gosling would go to great lengths for his role, even if it meant hanging from wires or being covered in Vaseline.
Gosling expressed his excitement about working with Weir, calling him “the greatest scientific mind of our time.” He shared how the story deeply affected him, reflecting on his character’s growth: “I was a scared guy who had to do something impossible.”
The movie follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As he recollects details, he discovers his mission: to solve a mystery threatening Earth’s survival. This includes forming an unlikely friendship that may aid him in this daunting task.
During the panel, they unveiled four clips from the film. In one, Grace awakens from a coma and humorously struggles with the simple question, “What is 2+2?” In another, he interacts with a specimen in a lab, revealing it to be an alien cell — only for it to promptly die.
Gosling described his character as a “reluctant hero.” He resonated with Grace’s fears and vulnerabilities, stating, “He’s somebody who has given up on himself but gets a chance to believe in himself again.”
The final clips showcased the interaction between Grace and the alien Rocky, who lacks a face but communicates through creative means. The filmmakers used puppeteers to bring Rocky to life, making him a relatable character.
As for the film’s exciting prospects, the first trailer garnered 400 million views in its first week, setting a record for original movies not based on existing content. Project Hail Mary launches in theaters on March 20, 2026, and brings together a talented cast, including Milana Vayntrub and Lionel Boyce.
This film, based on Weir’s bestselling novel, promises to blend humor, suspense, and an emotional journey. It could serve as a reminder of the power of friendship and courage in the face of overwhelming odds.
