Kathmandu, May 17: Experts are sounding alarms about climate change’s serious impact on mountain regions. In a recent session during the Sagarmatha Sambaad, they highlighted how these communities will face even greater risks if timely action isn’t taken.

Dr. Tao Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences pointed out that mountains are feeling the heat more than other areas because of rising global temperatures. Dr. Simon Allen from the University of Zurich stressed the importance of building local capacities to help communities adapt to these changes.

Emily Mark, a geological engineer at BGC Engineering in Canada, noted that climate change threatens not only natural ecosystems but also development efforts. Rajib Shaw, a professor at Keio University in Japan, emphasized that collaboration—from local to global levels—is crucial for tackling these challenges effectively.

Dr. Niels Hovius, head of Germany’s Research Centre for Geosciences, highlighted the need for early warning systems to manage natural disasters, monitor climate impacts, and promote sustainable practices. Mountains are especially vulnerable, facing risks like landslides, floods, and avalanches.

According to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), over the next few decades, mountain communities could face an increase in these threats, affecting their livelihoods significantly.
