Unveiling ‘Surviving Ohio State’: Insights into University Officials’ Evolving Response Over the Years

“Surviving Ohio State,” a documentary about Dr. Richard Strauss’s abuses, recently debuted on HBO Max. The film sheds light on the harrowing experiences of survivors and the failures of university officials to act on warnings about Strauss’s misconduct.

Dr. Strauss was a physician at Ohio State University. He has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 170 former students, with over 2,800 reports of inappropriate behavior documented. These included incidents of rape, leaving many in shock.

Since 2018, Ohio State has settled with 296 survivors, paying over $60 million in total. University spokesperson Ben Johnson mentioned that the school is also covering counseling and medical treatment for victims.

A prominent voice in the documentary is Mike Schyck, a former wrestler who felt betrayed by the coaches he trusted. He noted that he chose Ohio State not for the school itself but for its coaching staff, including Jim Jordan, who now serves in Congress. Despite knowing about the abuse claims, Jordan denied any awareness, which survivors openly challenged.

The investigation, conducted by the law firm Perkins Coie, revealed that many student-athletes had spoken directly to coaches about Strauss’s behavior. Yet, little action was taken to address their concerns. Survivors like Fred Feeney also recounted their experiences, detailing how their complaints went ignored.

New research highlights that universities are often slow to respond to sexual abuse claims, partly due to the complex dynamics of power and loyalty in athletic programs. For instance, a survey showed that more than 70% of college athletes would hesitate to report misconduct for fear of retribution. In Strauss’s case, the environment allowed him to operate without consequence for years.

Russ Hellickson, a wrestling coach at Ohio State, acknowledged that he had concerns about Strauss’s behavior but did little to intervene. Many former athletes have expressed feelings of abandonment, noting how their coaches did not support them in their time of need.

“I bleed scarlet and gray,” Schyck said, expressing his deep disappointment with the university that he once admired. The institutional failures resonate, reminding us that awareness alone isn’t enough; decisive action is essential to protect victims and accountability is critical for those who ignore cries for help.

Despite the challenges survivors face in speaking out, movements for change continue to grow. The conversation around accountability in sports is gaining momentum, with some calling for stronger regulations and support systems within athletic programs. Much is still to be done to ensure that no one has to suffer in silence again.
