Unveiling the 2025 Tony Awards Predictions: Top Contenders for Best New Musical, Best Leading Actress, and More!

The latest Broadway season has been a lively one. It’s the strongest since the pandemic, with shows breaking records and many featuring star-studded casts. However, the industry faces challenges—few new musicals are turning profits. Still, there’s a variety of productions to enjoy, making this year’s Tony Awards a tough choice for voters.

With voting well underway, I spoke to over a quarter of the 840 Tony voters to gather their opinions on which shows and performers stand out this year. Here’s a look at what to expect.

One show likely to shine is “Maybe Happy Ending.” At first glance, it might not seem appealing: it’s about two lonely robots on a road trip in Seoul, but it has captivated audiences. Over the last seven months, the musical has gained popularity through strong reviews and buzz among theatergoers.

This musical is in a prime position to win, especially against its competitors like “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Death Becomes Her.” Those shows are adaptations of existing works, while “Maybe Happy Ending” boasts an original story and score. This originality is something that many voters clearly appreciate, especially in a climate dominated by adaptations of films and books.

Interestingly, 2023 has seen a broader trend toward unique narratives in theater. According to a recent Theater Research Survey, about 68% of theatergoers express a desire for more original works rather than adaptations. This shift might influence the outcome of the Tony Awards, bringing fresh talent and stories to the forefront.

In sum, the Tony Awards this year reflect a blend of fresh talent and classic Broadway style, making it a fascinating event for theater enthusiasts.
