Warner Bros. recently unveiled the first trailer for “The Bride,” a monster movie directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. This film stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, diving into a fresh take on the classic Frankenstein tale.

The story takes place in 1930s Chicago. A lonely Frankenstein seeks help from Dr. Euphronius to create a partner. They revive a murdered woman, giving birth to the powerful Bride. But things spiral out of control, leading to unexpected romance and chaos, catching the eye of law enforcement and sparking a social movement.

This adaptation pulls inspiration from James Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein” and Mary Shelley’s original 1818 novel. Buckley shines in the title role, while Bale portrays Frankenstein’s creature. The impressive cast also features Penélope Cruz, Annette Bening, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Gyllenhaal shared initial images from the project in April 2024, showcasing Bale transformed into Frankenstein. Behind the scenes, the team includes noteworthy talents like Lawrence Sher (cinematographer for “Joker”) and Sandy Powell (costume designer for “Cinderella”). This marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial venture, following her acclaimed debut with “The Lost Daughter,” which earned three Academy Award nominations.

Interestingly, “The Bride” is just one of several upcoming adaptations of the Frankenstein story. Guillermo del Toro is also directing a version for Netflix, featuring Jacob Elordi as the monster. This film boasts a star-studded cast, including Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth.
