Now, let’s take a look at how this set came together.
The journey began about a year and a half ago. When Aaron Forsythe pitched Universes Beyond, I couldn’t wait to dive into Marvel. My initial task was to create seven cards showcasing what Magic could achieve within the Marvel realm.
Among these was my “deep cut,” featuring Doreen Green, better known as Squirrel Girl. Here’s a glimpse into her card design:
Squirrel Girl (rare)
2GG | Legendary Creature — Squirrel Human | 4/4
Whenever Squirrel Girl enters the battlefield or attacks, create a 1/1 green Squirrel creature token.
2GG: For each Squirrel you control, create a 1/1 green Squirrel creature token.
Interestingly, Squirrel Girl really resonated during internal testing, highlighting how beloved characters can influence the game.
Ultimately, our collaboration with Marvel was a huge success, leading to a series of sets featuring its iconic characters. The Marvel Universe, with its rich history and diverse characters, offers endless possibilities for Magic cards.
In design, we focused on creating significant mechanics reflecting themes from the Marvel Universe. We developed concepts around teamwork, where heroes and villains could work together or against each other in gameplay. For instance, we created a mechanic called teamwork, which allows players to tap creatures to increase their spell’s power—fitting for superhero teamwork!
We also introduced double-faced cards to represent characters’ dual identities and included Sagas to narrate popular stories from Marvel. These elements kept gameplay dynamic and engaging.
One surprising shift was replacing the original “signal” mechanic, which didn’t resonate well during testing. We opted instead for a mechanic that mirrors the essence of the game: teamwork. This kind of flexibility helps players feel more connected to their favorite characters.
In conclusion, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes is more than just a game; it’s a celebration of beloved characters brought to life in a new way. This project has been about creating something both fans of Marvel and Magic can enjoy together.
I would love to hear your thoughts about this set. What mechanics are you most excited about? Let’s have a conversation!
