ExxonMobil has submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for its seventh oil extraction project to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The EPA has announced that the EIA and the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) are now available for public review. People have 60 days from today to look over these documents and share their thoughts with the EPA.
The EIA and EIS can be downloaded directly from the EPA’s website.
Last July, the EPA noted that ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) requested environmental clearance for this new project at the Hammerhead site. Currently, EMGL operates three oil platforms and is building three more, with plans to eventually produce over one million barrels of oil daily from the Stabroek Bloc.
The Hammerhead project raises important questions about how the government will negotiate for better benefits for Guyana, especially in light of concerns regarding the disliked 2016 Production Sharing Agreement.
The EPA highlighted that this project could have significant environmental impacts. Its proximity to other development sites raises concerns about cumulative effects, along with the risks of unexpected issues during oil production.
Last December, two Guyanese citizens, Wintress Morris and Joy Marcus, took legal action to stop the Hammerhead project. They argue it will contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, harming the environment. Their lawyers include Melinda Janki, Tim Prudhoe, Anna-Kay Brown, and Suzanne Bullen, representing their fight to protect Guyana and its people.
