On April 3, the Indian Navy will proudly welcome its latest stealth frigate, Taragiri (F41), in a significant ceremony at Visakhapatnam. This moment underscores India’s vision of maintaining strong maritime sovereignty and self-reliance.
Taragiri is the fourth ship in the Project 17A class and represents the “Make in India” initiative. Weighing in at 6,670 tonnes, this vessel showcases advanced engineering from Indian shipyards, particularly built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. It stands out with a sleek design and a reduced Radar Cross-Section, enhancing its stealth capabilities.
What makes Taragiri especially noteworthy is that over 75% of its components are sourced locally. This achievement reflects the growth of a robust domestic industrial network, which includes over 200 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This shift towards self-reliance, known as Aatmanirbharta, is creating jobs and boosting the economy.
Powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, Taragiri is built for versatility, capable of high speeds and long endurance. Its advanced weaponry includes supersonic Surface-to-Surface Missiles, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles, and specialized systems for Anti-Submarine Warfare. These technologies are integrated through a modern Combat Management System, allowing the crew to tackle threats quickly and efficiently.
Beyond combat, Taragiri is equipped to handle humanitarian missions, making it adaptable for various roles, from defense to disaster response.
