In Indian households, spending time playing games on smartphones has become the norm. A recent survey by CyberMedia Research (CMR) found that over 32% of users dedicate four to six hours each week to mobile gaming. Among Gen Z, this number is even higher—about 74% of them play for at least six hours weekly.

Gaming Addiction Concerns

CMR surveyed 1,550 individuals from various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, covering different age groups: Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. This survey surfaced during increasing worries about gaming addiction in India. The government is considering measures to limit gaming time and regulate online spending. The survey revealed that 72% of smartphone gamers play mainly for entertainment, mental agility, and social interaction.

Gen Z’s Gaming Preferences

Sugandha Srivastava, a Senior Analyst at CyberMedia, highlights a shift in gaming behavior. People are gravitating toward more immersive and competitive games. Gen Z players are not just playing longer but are looking for high-quality experiences. Popular games among respondents include Free Fire and BGMI, each played by 26% of users, while 19% opted for puzzle or First-Person Shooter genres. Intriguingly, 57% of Gen Z are now participating in eSports.

Hardware Choices and Trends

When it comes to devices, Gen Z favors smartphones equipped with powerful chipsets. The survey identified MediaTek Dimensity and Qualcomm Snapdragon as top choices. MediaTek leads in customer satisfaction at 46%, while Qualcomm maintains a premium image with 40% of users willing to pay extra for its products. Menka Kumari, another Analyst at CyberMedia, emphasizes that young users trust smartphones with these chipsets for their performance and quality.

Conclusion

Mobile gaming is undeniably a significant aspect of modern Indian life, especially for the younger crowd. With industry trends leaning towards competitive and immersive experiences, smartphone technology continues to evolve. As gaming grows, keeping an eye on its impact—both positive and negative—on society will be essential.
