Unveiling the Hidden Threats: Canadian Sikhs Expose Allegations of Spying and Intimidation by India

Documents unveiled by the foreign interference inquiry reveal serious concerns about threats and harassment faced by Canadian Sikhs from the Indian government. These threats are said to be organized through diplomatic channels in Canada.

Witnesses shared alarming accounts with the Hogue Commission, alleging that India has spied on Sikh temples, threatened families of Sikhs in Canada, and interfered in Canadian elections. One witness noted, “India interferes in Canada because there is no reason not to.” They expressed frustration over the lack of consequences for such actions.

The inquiry gathered hundreds of submissions from diverse communities, but the experiences of Sikh Canadians stood out. Many reported increased interference since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration took charge in 2014, with claims from high-ranking officials that dissenters abroad could be targeted. Canada considers India the second biggest foreign interference threat, following China, focusing particularly on the Khalistan movement, which seeks independence for the Punjab region.

One witness described how after attending a protest, his family members in India were threatened. Others shared stories of political candidates facing intimidation and efforts by India to manipulate local election processes. Some alleged that India pressures political parties in Canada to exclude candidates who speak out against its human rights abuses.

The inquiry also highlighted that Sikh temple elections have not been immune to interference, as consulate officials were accused of denying visas to Sikh activists wanting to travel to India. There’s a growing suspicion within the Sikh community regarding whether Canadian politicians might be influenced by the Indian government.

Calls for change are emerging from community members. Suggestions include more rigorous background checks for political nominees to identify ties to the Indian government and limiting the influence of Indian diplomatic missions. Some witnesses expressed concerns about covert Indian operations within Canada, including allegations of “police stations” that intimidate Canadian activists.

The witnesses urged Canadian authorities to enhance transparency and reporting on incidents of foreign interference. A permanent task force was proposed to coordinate responses and ensure the safety of individuals who feel threatened.

The context of these revelations is grave. In June 2023, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh leader, was killed in Canada, leading to accusations against the Indian government. Canadian law enforcement has linked several acts of violence in the country to Indian officials, alleging that high-level discussions within the Indian government approved such actions.

These issues underline the ongoing struggle against foreign interference in Canada, notably involving the Indian government and its impact on the Sikh community.
