The Indian Railways is set to enhance travel connectivity to Kashmir with the planned extension of the Vande Bharat Express. Following the completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which covers 272 kilometers, train services aim to connect Jammu Tawi directly to Srinagar. Currently, train operations begin from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) to Srinagar, but the new service promises a more convenient route for travelers.
The USBRL project, one of the most challenging railway initiatives since India’s independence, spans across various districts in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s not just about connecting cities; it aims to boost tourism and foster economic growth in the region. According to the Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, station redevelopment and improved security measures are necessary before the Vande Bharat trains can operate out of Jammu Tawi. Recent surveys indicate that 65% of locals support the new train service, viewing it as vital for tourism and mobility.
Since the inauguration of the USBRL, Indian Railways has introduced several Vande Bharat services connecting Katra and Srinagar, including the 26401/26402 and 26403/26404 trains. Additionally, six pairs of DEMU/MEMU services have been introduced in the Qazigund-Srinagar and Srinagar-Baramulla sectors, ensuring better intra-regional connectivity.
The completion of infrastructure at Jammu station is critical. Once these upgrades and security protocols are finalized, extending the service will be operationally feasible. This change not only improves accessibility for travelers but also aligns with governmental efforts to develop the region’s connectivity landscape.
