Unveiling the Magic: My Experience at the First Official Elf on the Shelf Bar – An Enchanting Evening Awaits!

It was a cold Wednesday evening, and I was in a rush. After misplacing my wallet and keys, I realized I forgot my phone and had to double back. Not the best start to the night. But everything changed when I stepped into the winter wonderland of Cheers from the Shelf, the first official Elf on the Shelf pop-up bar.

Housed in Morris American Bar in Northwest Washington, D.C., this festive spot is a partnership between Versus and Lumistella Company. Open until December 30, the bar offers holiday cocktails, tasty bites, and a whimsical atmosphere filled with over 50 elves, each watching to see who’s been naughty or nice.

Walking in, it felt like stepping into a classy version of Christmas. From elves dangling from the ceiling to an enchanted staircase lined with Christmas lights, the decor was both enchanting and playful. Chanda Bell, co-author of “The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition,” explains that they wanted to blend the worlds of childhood wonder and adult elegance. She notes, “The Elf on the Shelf sort of lives in these two spaces, right? The human world and then the North Pole.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Elf franchise now sees its original fans turning into young professionals. Vinoda Basnayake, CEO of Versus, shares that they aim to create a nostalgic space for these adults who cherished the tradition as kids.

As I settled in, I felt the stress of adulthood melt away. Here, I could relive the joys of childhood while sipping on expertly crafted cocktails. Some standout drinks included the Nice-Tini—a smooth blend of vodka, cream, and peppermint—and the Snow Surprises, a tropical, rum-based delight. Each drink boasted unique presentations, like ceramic reindeer mugs and candy-cane garnishes, adding to the thematic experience.

The menu also featured delicious bites. We enjoyed classic party foods like grilled cheese and a delectable take on s’mores, served in a mini cast-iron skillet—an adult treat with a playful twist.

The crowd reflected a diverse mix of ages, with laughter echoing around the room. One excited mother from North Carolina shared how her family reads the Elf book every year, making it a cherished holiday tradition for her kids aged 6 to 14.

As the night unfolded, I saw that the cheerful vibe resonated with guests of all ages. Each encounter was filled with joy and nostalgia, all while helping us embrace the holiday spirit. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the Elf or just looking for a magical evening out, this pop-up is a fun escape from the everyday hustle.

So if you find yourself in D.C. this December, check out Cheers from the Shelf for a merry escape. Perhaps the elves will remember you on the nice list!
