Mark your calendars for February 6! The crime thriller The Silent Hour starring Ewan Kinnaman hits theaters. This film is notable as it’s Kinnaman’s second project with “silence” in the title, following John Woo’s nearly dialogue-free Silent Night from 2023. Directed by Brad Anderson, known for The Machinist, this movie promises to be intriguing.

In The Silent Hour, Boston Police Detective Frank Shaw is in a tough spot. During a chase, he gets seriously injured, leading to rapid hearing loss. After some time away, he returns to work but is a different man. His old partner, Doug Slater, now with the narcotics unit, crosses paths with Shaw again while investigating a double murder. A deaf witness named Ava holds crucial information.
The story takes a twist when Frank, who has learned sign language to communicate with Ava, finds himself back at her apartment only to discover shady characters have already been there. It raises the stakes significantly. The film’s tension resembles classic action movies but turns out, it leans more into being a crime thriller than a high-adrenaline action flick.
Anderson’s film features moments reminiscent of Bruce Willis’s roles, like in Die Hard. While it seems action-packed at first glance, it is filled with quieter, introspective scenes that reveal character depth. Frank charting his new course prepares him for a heroic challenge – a journey where he often relies more on luck than skill against bumbling villains.
I’ll admit, as the plot unfolds, some moments feel predictable. There’s a slow pacing at times where we see characters reflecting on their struggles. Yet, it does keep you engaged and offers a few intense scenes where the audience genuinely worries for the characters’ safety.
Overall, The Silent Hour is a modest thriller that might not leave a lasting impression but offers a decent time at the movies. It’s a bit flawed but certainly retains some intriguing and tense moments that could make for a cozy February night out.
