Buried deep in the hills of southern Brazil and northern Argentina, scientists have unearthed enormous tunnels, likely created by massive Ice Age creatures. These tunnels can stretch up to 600 yards and are wide enough for an adult to walk through. They are not products of natural geological processes or human activity.
In the last decade, researchers have cataloged over 1,500 of these gigantic tunnels, unveiling an ancient underground habitat once dominated by colossal animals. Unique claw marks in the tunnels suggest they were crafted by prehistoric giants rather than being formed by natural erosion.
Heinrich Frank, a geologist from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, points out that the shape and construction of these tunnels don’t resemble any known formations. “There’s no geological process that creates long tunnels with a circular or elliptical section, especially ones with claw marks,” he says. Plus, the tough geological makeup of the area would have made it hard for both humans and machines to dig.
The study, published in Ichnos, reveals that some chambers have been modified over time, indicating that they weren’t just dug out once but were maintained to serve a purpose.
To identify the builders of these tunnels, researchers examined the size and traits of the burrows and claw marks. The largest tunnels measure about 6 feet wide and tall, aligning with the size of giant ground sloths, particularly Megatherium, which could grow up to 12 feet tall and weigh around four tons.
Using scientific comparisons, Frank highlights that the claw marks match those of sloths, ruling out smaller animals like armadillos. “If a 90-pound animal today can dig a small burrow, what could dig one five feet wide and 250 feet long?” Frank asks, emphasizing the mystery surrounding these tunnels.
These tunnels are more than just fossil remains; they’re “trace fossils” that tell us about the behavior of ancient sloths. By analyzing them, scientists gain insights into the environments these giants inhabited and how they interacted with their surroundings.
The discovery of these tunnels also sheds light on the dramatic changes in the Earth’s environment after the extinction of its megafauna. According to a study in Science Advances, “it is possible that sloth behavior was playful, but interactions with humans were probably more about stalking or hunting,” suggesting that giant sloths were not just victims but formidable creatures in their own right.
