Oberlies also emphasized that this incident isn’t about a contract dispute. Instead, he criticized the way the footage was used to push a narrative that wasn’t their own. This points to a broader issue of ethical storytelling in the media.
Combs’ representatives have claimed that the footage was “stolen,” and they suspect corporate retaliation from Netflix. They suggest that after Diddy turned down a previous project proposed by the streaming service, Netflix retaliated with this documentary. In response, Netflix firmly denied these claims. A spokesperson stated that the documentary had no connections to past negotiations with Diddy. Director Alexandria Stapleton also defended the documentary, stating that they have all necessary rights to the footage. The video shows Diddy expressing frustration and urging his legal team to find aggressive lawyers to defend him.
Currently, Diddy is serving a 30-month sentence after being found guilty of lesser charges related to prostitution-related offenses. He was released on July 2 but still faces multiple civil suits and a separate investigation for sexual battery. If his appeal does not succeed, he is expected to remain in prison until June 2028.
