Meet the Reapers, the newly branded junior lacrosse team from North Okanagan. Formerly known as the Vernon Iron Ghost Construction Tigers, they’ve made some exciting changes for the upcoming season.
After merging with the Armstrong Junior Shamrocks, the team needed a fresh identity, as league rules require a name change within two years of a merger. Assistant governor Jacob Kuiken explained, “We had to come up with something new after the merger.
Players from both Vernon and Armstrong make up the Reapers’ roster, along with talent from surrounding areas like Shuswap, Salmon Arm, and Enderby. The team plans to play all eight of its home games at the Sunbelt Arena in Armstrong.
Support from local businesses is vital for junior sports. Trevor McEachnie of Iron Ghost Construction has been crucial for the team. Kuiken expressed gratitude for his unwavering support: “His dedication to junior lacrosse has been phenomenal.”
Last season, the team finished with a 7-8-1 record, securing second place in their league. They reached the semifinals, defeating the South Okanagan Flames, but were swept by the Kamloops Venom in the championship series. This season, the Reapers hope to build on their recent performance and aim for the top.
As the season kicks off on April 5 against the Flames, excitement is building. The home opener is set for April 12 against the Kelowna Kodiaks. Each team plays a 16-game schedule, featuring a mix of home and away games.
Notably, the Reapers are led by Casey Sherriff, the league’s Coach of the Year for 2024. They also boast Kian Yargeau, who made a splash last season with an impressive 62 points, and Ryley Lockhurst, the top goalie who made over 500 saves. This dedication and talent could push the Reapers to new heights this year.
The league’s popularity continues to grow, with fans eager to support their local teams. Junior lacrosse not only fosters teamwork but also strengthens community connections. As we look ahead, the Reapers are ready to take the ice and aim for success on the field.
As the season unfolds, keep an eye on this exciting new chapter for the North Okanagan Iron Ghost Construction Reapers. With their commitment to excellence and community support, they just might turn the tide in their favor this year.
