Unveiling the Outer Banks’ Most Popular Happy Hour: Does It Really Live Up to the Hype?

I’ll admit something: even though I’ve lived in Hampton Roads since 2010, I never made it to the Outer Banks of North Carolina—until now. In March, I finally took a 1½-hour drive to explore this beautiful area.

To kick off my visit, my colleague and I headed to a popular happy hour spot, Hurricane Mo’s Beachside Bar & Grill in Kitty Hawk. It definitely lived up to its glowing reputation, giving us a taste of summer fun.

The happy hour menu is a delight. You’ll find tasty chicken wings, steamed shrimp, and tacos. The drink selection includes beer (both on tap and in bottles), a few wine options, and some uniquely crafted cocktails. Two standouts include the Devil’s Pain Killer—a mix of Kill Devil Pecan Rum, piña colada mix, and fruit juice—and Vitamin Sea, made with orange vodka and triple sec.

We chose to sit at the Cat 5 Deck Bar, separate from the main restaurant. It was lively, with a crowd enjoying ’80s tunes. The bartender recommended their two most popular drinks.

The Category 5 Hurricane was reminiscent of the famous Hurricane cocktail from New Orleans. It’s a fruity treat that can sneak up on you—just a few sips in, and you’ll see what I mean!

Then there was the Pina Mo’lada, a spin on the classic piña colada. Topped with blue curaçao liqueur, it transforms into a stunning ocean blue when stirred. This creamy drink is a perfect companion for a beach sing-along.

For anyone planning a visit, here are some quick details:

  • Location: 120 E. Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
  • Happy Hours: 3 to 5 p.m. (3 to 6 p.m. during the off-season)
  • Prices: $11.99 for drinks, 25-cent steamed shrimp, 50-cent Hurricane wings, $1 hard tacos, and $1.50 soft tacos
  • More Info: hurricanemosbeachsidebarandgrill.com; phone: 252-255-0215

Interestingly, local polls suggest that more people are opting for staycations in 2023. According to a recent study by the American Hotel and Lodging Association, nearly 65% of travelers prefer shorter road trips this year. This trend boosts interest in local gems like Hurricane Mo’s.

So, if you’re looking for a fun escape without the hassle of long-distance travel, the Outer Banks might just be the perfect destination. Enjoy your time and take in those vibrant flavors!
