According to a Bloomberg report, the hackers included young individuals, like 18-year-old Noah Urban from Florida, who specialized in tricking employees at various companies, including those in tech and cryptocurrency. They managed to access some sensitive user information but Crypto.com stated that no customer funds were compromised. Just a few users’ personal data was involved.

Despite the breach, Crypto.com did not inform the affected users publicly, which caught the attention of blockchain investigator ZachXBT. He criticized the company on social media, claiming that it had downplayed the seriousness of the situation.

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek defended the platform. He emphasized that the incident was reported to regulators and that their security measures worked quickly to contain the breach. “We detected a phishing campaign aimed at one of our employees,” he noted. This quick action ensured that customer funds were safeguarded.

The Scattered Spider group has gained notoriety for its sophisticated tactics, evolving from simple scams to major corporate hacks. Urban, who acted as a “caller” in the group, was integral in convincing employees to share their login details.

This breach wasn’t isolated. Urban was arrested in January 2024 after being charged with hacking multiple companies. Authorities reported significant losses, including the seizure of $4.8 million in cryptocurrency. Urban pleaded guilty and received a ten-year prison sentence.
