Kya Clark, often referred to as the “marsh girl,” lives a lonely life in Barkley Cove. Abandoned by her family, she learns to survive by selling mussels to the local store. Her world turns upside down when Chase Andrews, a man she once loved, is found dead. Despite a lack of evidence, Kya becomes the main suspect in his murder. Her lawyer must work tirelessly to prove her innocence and save her from a harsh fate.
Directed by Olivia Newman, Where the Crawdads Sing is based on Delia Owens’ bestselling novel. Set in 1969, the film beautifully captures the essence of the coastal town of Barkley Cove. It begins with a gripping scene where two boys discover Chase’s body in the marsh. Kya’s arrest follows swiftly as the town quickly jumps to conclusions about her guilt. David Strathairn plays Tom Milton, a retired attorney who takes on Kya’s case, showcasing her struggles as an outcast fighting against society’s judgment.
The movie weaves a tale of drama and romance, highlighting Kya’s love for nature and her complex relationships with those around her. First, there is Tate Walker, who teaches her essential life skills, followed by Chase, whose charm masks his flaws. The real mystery lies in whether Chase’s death was murder or an accident. Kya’s backstory reveals a troubled childhood with an alcoholic father, emphasizing her deep sense of isolation and resilience.
Kya is akin to a modern-day Mowgli, not raised by animals but shaped by the wilderness around her. She grows into a striking young woman, drawing the interest of local men, even though others shun her. Daisy Edgar-Jones captivates as Kya, embodying her curiosity and connection with the natural world. Yet, she faces harsh realities, including societal prejudice and the weight of her past. Themes of independence and self-reliance resonate throughout her journey.
Although the chemistry among the characters may feel lukewarm at times, the film captivates through its stunning visuals and haunting score. The suspense surrounding Chase’s fate keeps viewers engaged, even if some plot twists are predictable. Despite my early guess about the story’s outcome proving correct, I still found it enjoyable as a one-time watch.
