Consumer Reports recently raised a red flag about something many pet owners might not think about: lead in protein powders. They tested 23 different protein products and found that over two-thirds had lead levels exceeding what’s considered safe—some even more than ten times that limit.

One of the suspect ingredients? Pea protein. This ingredient is popular in both human food and many pet foods. According to Consumer Reports, lead can sneak into pea protein during its processing. It might come from the machines used, the water mixed in, or even from the substances used to turn the protein into powder. While the pea protein in human food meets strict safety standards, the pea protein found in pet food often does not.

This leads to a big concern: If human-grade pea protein can have such high lead levels, what about the feed-grade pea protein used in pet food?

In 2019, a lawsuit against Taste of the Wild pet food highlighted this issue, revealing alarming lead levels. One sample of their dog food had lead levels so high that it surpassed many homes in Flint, Michigan. The challenge here is that the FDA hasn’t set maximum lead levels for pet food, and no regulatory authority actively monitors these dangerous contaminants.

If your pet food contains ingredients like pea protein, pea starch, or pea fiber, it’s worth reaching out to the manufacturer. Ask them if their products are tested for heavy metals and request lab analysis results.
