Three people tragically lost their lives in a shooting at the American Fish Company bar in Southport, North Carolina, over the weekend. The victims were identified as 36-year-old Solomon Banjo, 64-year-old Joy Rogers, and 56-year-old Michael Durbin.
In addition to the three fatalities, five others sustained injuries during the incident, but their identities remain undisclosed.
Joy Rogers was particularly beloved in the community. Her husband, Lennie, shared with CBS that she was a devoted wife and a mother of three. A year ago, the family moved to Southport for a peaceful retirement. Lennie described her as someone who brought joy and kindness wherever she went, embodying her name. Her support for the community and her church, Generations Church, made her a well-known figure. The church expressed their sorrow and described her as a vibrant part of their community.
The suspect, Nigel Edge, is a decorated Marine veteran who has been charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder. During his court appearance, he appeared somber and is being held without bond. Charges could lead to a possible death penalty as prosecutors are considering the severity of the crimes.
The shooting has sparked conversations about mental health and gun safety in the U.S., especially concerning veterans. A recent study by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs revealed that veterans are at a higher risk for suicide and gun violence when they struggle with PTSD or other mental health issues.
