The Future of the Chevrolet Camaro: A Look at Reliability and Competition
The production of the Chevrolet Camaro’s sixth generation wrapped up after the 2024 model year. What’s next for this iconic muscle car? There’s been chatter about a GM trademark for the Camaro name in Cambodia, but that doesn’t guarantee a new model is on the horizon. If it does return, there’s speculation it could resemble the Mustang Mach-E as an all-electric SUV—quite a shift from its muscle-car roots.
For die-hard Camaro fans, there’s a silver lining. The sixth generation received strong reliability ratings from J.D. Power, which means many might still be on the road as we await news on a possible seventh generation. J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study gives valuable insights, but it’s important to note that the Camaro was only eligible for ratings starting in 2019, after three years on the market. Despite this late start, it topped its class in 2021 and came in second place in 2022.
A Closer Look at Camaro Reliability
The fifth-generation Camaro really set the bar high for reliability, receiving scores between 82 and 86 out of 100 annually during its last five years. It consistently earned a “Great” rating from J.D. Power.
The sixth generation, while fresh and new, had big shoes to fill. Although its design vastly differed from the fifth, it shared a strong platform with the Cadillac ATS and CTS, which had already proven reliable. Notably, a long-term review by Car and Driver highlighted that a 2016 Camaro SS logged 40,000 miles without a single mechanical issue.
Early on, the sixth-gen model had average reliability ratings for its first two years, but it bounced back by 2018, solidifying its “Great” status until production ended. Interestingly, it sometimes ranked higher than the renowned Toyota Camry in reliability.
Camaro in the Muscle Car Arena
How does the Camaro fare against its rivals? J.D. Power suggests it stands strong in terms of reliability. Consumers generally agree, as these ratings reflect thousands of real experiences from car owners.
Compared to the Dodge Challenger, the Camaro held its ground well. The Challenger received Great ratings multiple times during the sixth generation’s run but was also rated as Average and unrated in other years. It tied with the Camaro for reliability right before J.D. Power stopped testing gas-powered models in 2023.
The Ford Mustang, another competitor, had five Great ratings during the same period but also faced two average years. Meanwhile, the Dodge Charger plans to return with a two-door version powered by gas engines, but we’ll have to wait for its reliability scores.
