Which Star Wars movies and TV shows are the most popular on streaming? Some recent data from Nielsen gives us some clear insights.
For Star Wars Day, or May the Fourth, Nielsen looked at what people were watching on Disney+, the main home for Star Wars content.
One striking detail is that 44% of total viewing time came from live-action Star Wars films. In contrast, 39% was from live-action series, while only 17% belonged to animated shows. This shows that the 11 films still play a massive role, despite the many hours of TV content available.
In 2025, the most-watched title was Andor, thanks to its second season launching last spring. Another notable mention was the animated series Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, which was also popular enough to make the top ten.
Interestingly, Andor held the top spot among Millennials (ages 30-45) and Gen X (ages 46-61) in the first quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian topped the charts for Gen Alpha (ages 2-13) and Boomers (ages 62-80). For Gen Z (ages 14-29), the favorite was Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Looking at the broader trends, only live-action movies seemed to dominate the list. Surprisingly, none of the sequel trilogy films made it into the top ten, despite The Force Awakens being the highest-grossing film in U.S. history, raking in nearly $1 billion.
After Andor, the top ten included films like Star Wars: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This balance between the original and prequel trilogies reflects the ongoing love for both eras. Critics often favor the originals, but fan favorites span across the entire saga.
As Disney gears up to release The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22, it’s clear that the Star Wars legacy remains strong across generations.
Recent surveys indicate that about 70% of Star Wars fans still prefer watching the older films compared to the newer series. This sentiment shows the lasting impact of the classic storylines and characters. Star Wars isn’t just a franchise; it’s a shared experience that resonates across age groups, making it a unique space in the entertainment world.
