Oregon Ducks Shut Out Northwestern in Strong Comeback
ROSEMONT, Ill. — The Oregon Ducks bounced back impressively, defeating Northwestern 4-0 on Friday. Pitchers Lyndsey Grein and Taylour Spencer teamed up to secure a one-hit shutout, evening the series after Oregon lost the previous game.
Grein set the tone early, retiring all six batters in her first two innings. Spencer took over in the third, striking out six batters and allowing just one walk in her 3.1 innings. Northwestern had a brief moment of hope in the fourth when Kaylie Avvisato walked and Emma Raye got on base with an infield single. Spencer, however, ended that threat by striking out the next two batters.
Returning to pitch in the sixth, Grein retired the remaining five batters, achieving four strikeouts and no walks. Both pitchers were impressive, maintaining a shutout with perfect innings in various moments.
Coach Melyssa Lombardi praised her team’s resilience. After a tough loss in the first game, they united and didn’t let the setback define them. She noted the important contributions from both the pitching staff and the defense.
Offensively, the Ducks’ scoring began in the second inning thanks to an error by Northwestern. Taryn Ho reached first on a throwing mishap, later advancing due to a wild pitch. Emma Cox delivered a crucial double, bringing Ho home for the first run.
In the third inning, Elon Butler’s double set the stage for another run. Amari Harper tripled, scoring Butler, and a sacrifice fly by Stefini Ma’ake made it 3-0. The Ducks tied a school record with their 25th sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, cementing their lead at 4-0.
In addition to the game highlights, it’s worth noting some individual achievements. Grein’s four strikeouts brought her career total to 359, placing her in Oregon’s top ten all-time. Elon Butler also reached a milestone with her 200th career hit, while Kaylynn Jones celebrated her 100th. Butler currently leads the Big Ten with 14 doubles on the season.
As the Ducks prepare to close out their 11-day road trip with the series finale against Northwestern on Sunday, fans are eager to see if they can continue their momentum.
