T-72 Tank Upgrades in Jabalpur: A Modernization Journey

The Indian Army is enhancing its fleet of T-72 tanks in Jabalpur. These tanks, initially built in the 1970s by the Soviet Union, have served India well since their purchase between 1970 and 1980. However, as technology has advanced, these once cutting-edge machines have started to show their age.

The government is partnering with Russia for the upgrades. The plan includes replacing the old 780 horsepower engine with a powerful 1,000 horsepower engine. This new engine will allow the T-72 tanks to run more efficiently, giving them a top speed of around 60 km/h.

One impressive feature of the T-72 is its 360-degree rotating gun, which means it can engage targets in any direction. With the upcoming upgrades, not only will the engine be improved, but the tanks will also receive a modernized operating system, boosting their firepower and overall performance.

Previously, upgrades were conducted in Chennai, but the Vehicle Factory in Jabalpur has now developed the necessary technical resources to handle this crucial work. The first upgraded tank has already arrived in Jabalpur, marking a significant milestone in the project.

The Indian government’s investment in this upgrade is substantial, amounting to about $248 million (around 2,100 crores). By choosing to upgrade rather than purchase new tanks, India is saving approximately 6,000 crores, as noted by Sanjeev Bhola, the Chief General Manager of the Vehicle Factory.

The Bigger Picture

Historically, the T-72 has been a vital part of India’s armored forces. With around 20,000 of these tanks still operational around the world, this upgrade ensures that India can continue to rely on a proven platform while modernizing its capabilities. In a recent survey by Defense News, nearly 70% of military experts believe that upgrading existing equipment is more cost-effective than buying new models, echoing India’s strategic decision.

As military technology continues to evolve, the modernization of the T-72 is not just about enhancing firepower.
