MARQUETTE, Mich. — UP Health System – Marquette has officially renewed its status as a Level II trauma center, thanks to a re-verification from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT). This marks 20 years of continuous accreditation, ensuring that the hospital remains the only ACS COT-verified Level II trauma center in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Maintaining this verification isn’t easy. Hospitals must regularly prove they meet national standards regarding staffing, resources, and patient care. This ongoing review process involves a thorough evaluation to ensure quality and effectiveness in trauma response.
Tonya Darner, the market CEO of UPHS – Marquette, expressed pride in this achievement. “This verification highlights our team’s dedication to high-quality trauma care,” she noted. “For two decades, we’ve been here for our community during critical times.”
Understanding trauma center levels helps demystify the healthcare system. Level I centers are typically larger and are required to conduct research and treat more patients. In contrast, Level II centers offer similar clinical services but have fewer requirements in these areas. This structure ensures that patients receive appropriate care based on their needs.
The ACS also offers a Trauma Verification, Review and Consultation (VRC) Program. This initiative provides an impartial review of trauma centers, helping them assess and enhance their care. A team of trauma experts visits the facility, looking at everything from hospital resources to patient care protocols.
UPHS – Marquette also holds the title of ACS Surgical Quality Partner, which signifies its commitment to improving surgical procedures and patient care. Patricia L. Turner, the Executive Director of ACS, highlighted the significance of this designation, stating that it showcases the hospital’s dedication to delivering top-notch patient care and continuous quality evaluation.
Notably, research indicates that patients treated at ACS COT-verified centers have a higher chance of survival and better recovery outcomes compared to those treated at non-verified facilities.
With this renewed verification, UP Health System – Marquette reaffirms its commitment to excellence in trauma care, ensuring that the community has access to high-quality medical support during their most urgent times of need.
