Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer recently spoke out about Jim Harbaugh, the ex-Michigan coach now leading the Los Angeles Chargers. Following Harbaugh’s 10-year show-cause order from the NCAA due to a sign-stealing scandal at Michigan, Meyer suggested the NFL should take similar action.
On his podcast, “The Triple Option,” Meyer recalled how the NFL handled a past situation with Jim Tressel. Tressel faced a suspension from Ohio State related to NCAA violations and, when he joined the Indianapolis Colts, the NFL supported that suspension. Meyer raised the question: would Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, do the same with Harbaugh? His answer: likely not.
The controversy stems from a detailed investigation into Michigan’s former staffer, Connor Stalions, who orchestrated an elaborate plan to gather in-game signals from opposing teams. He acquired tickets on the secondary market, allowing him and his accomplices to film opponents at 52 games over several seasons. The NCAA deemed this a serious violation and hit Michigan with fines that could exceed $30 million. While Harbaugh received a severe punishment, the NCAA chose not to impose a postseason ban on the Wolverines.
In the 2023 season, Michigan finished with a perfect record and won the national championship, even amid allegations against Harbaugh. He maintains that he was unaware of Stalions’ actions. The NCAA stated that Harbaugh’s program showed little respect for compliance with the rules.
Meyer’s podcast comments echo a significant moment in college football history. Tressel stepped down from Ohio State after an investigation into players trading memorabilia for tattoos, leading to penalties for both him and the school. The Colts initially delayed Tressel’s role with them to honor his suspension.
However, Meyer misremembered some details about Tressel’s situation with the Colts. The team decided to let Tressel begin his role in the seventh week of the season, a move Goodell approved.
Meyer himself faced criticism during his time as coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. His tenure was marred by reports of poor relationships with players and coaches, leading to an early dismissal after a disappointing season.
