At least 10 people in the U.S. have fallen ill due to a listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat food products. Federal officials have reported that the outbreak is associated with Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, based in San Fernando, California, and several of their products are being voluntarily recalled.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with state and local authorities to investigate the situation. The confirmed cases are located in California and Nevada, with those affected requiring hospitalization. The contaminated products were distributed across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington, reaching various locations, including hospitals, convenience stores, and airports.
Symptoms of listeria infection typically appear within two weeks of consuming contaminated food. Mild symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, and nausea, while severe cases can lead to headaches, confusion, and even convulsions. In this recent outbreak, six of the ten ill patients were hospitalized before contracting listeria.
The investigation first began last year but stalled due to insufficient evidence. It resumed in April when FDA inspectors discovered listeria in samples from Fresh & Ready Foods that matched the outbreak strain. Notably, these products were served in at least three healthcare facilities where the patients had previously received care.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collected samples from sick individuals between December 2023 and September 2024. Fresh & Ready has recalled several items marked with “use by” dates from April 22 to May 19 of this year, under brands like Fresh & Ready Foods and City Point Market Fresh Food to Go.
The seriousness of listeriosis shouldn’t be overlooked. According to the CDC, about 1,600 people get sick from listeria each year in the U.S., and it can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Taking proper precautions, such as checking for recalls and ensuring food safety, can make a significant difference.
